First Day of School

Well, we did it!  We made it through our first day at ILE.

Our Spanish classes don't start until Monday but we are at school all week for Orientation.  We will learn about the school, some pointers for living here in San Jose, have our placement test, oral exam, appointments with counselors/staff, & some other trainings.  Josie starts her PreK class this week & we are so thankful that she had such a great first day!

Waking up early this morning was rough.  We had to be at the gate of the school by 7am.

I (Laura) had an alarm set for 5 am in order to have some quiet time, coffee time, and get ready before waking up the bears (Daniel & Josie)!

Around 3am, Macie started panting and pacing our bedroom.  It was so loud it woke me up in a panic thinking that the puppies were coming.  So it took about an hour for us to get her comfortable & finally doze back into a light sleep.  When the alarm went off at 5, I hit snooze twice!

I got up & got ready.  At 6, I started to wake Josie up gently so that she didn't have to be rushed to leave.  Those of you that know her well ... know that she has to do things in her own time so I tried to nudge her gently into this weird new norm!

She got up reluctantly, went in to wake up her daddy, and struggled with eating breakfast.  She is not a big breakfast eater normally & waking up that early was definitely not changing that for her.

We got our things together, headed out the door, and tried our best to encourage Josie as we walked the uphill block to the front gate of the school.  From here on out, we will be able to just cross the street & use the South Gate!  What a praise!

We got to the school, got a few things from the registration table & waited a few minutes before walking Josie to her class.  She was still a little bit whiny & we really didn't know what to expect when we got to her classroom.

We walked across the campus & into her building.  The lady that helped show us her room pointed to Ms. Monica (her teacher) to show us where she needed to go.  The next thing we know, Josie went right over to her with her arms wide open & gave her a huge hug!  This is SO not her norm with new places.  Daniel & I both fought back tears watching her excitement.

Sweetness :)

She turned around, looked at us, & said "Bye mommy & daddy".  She waved & walked right into her classroom.  I had to ask her to come back to give us hugs and take a picture!  We were speechless & in awe of the peace that The Lord had given her!

We had a morning full of information.  We learned a lot about the school.  We are so encouraged & impressed with the emphasis on our hearts & walks with Christ while we are students here.  The chaplain said this morning that we are here to learn a language so that we can share the language of love wherever we are being led to serve.

What a beautiful reminder that this is all for the purpose of speaking the language of love to those that have never heard of that love.  We are excited not only to grow in our knowledge of Spanish but in our understanding of His steadfast love for us so that we can share that with others!

We finished our afternoon with some more information about Josie's school.  We are so excited that she gets the opportunity to attend school here while we are learning Spanish.  There is such an emphasis on loving the children at Sojourn while we are only here for a short time.  We are just so thankful to know that while we are studying each day, Josie will be loved on & learning as well.

We ended Orientation around 3:30 this afternoon & picked Josie girl up from her class.  She was so excited to tell us that she played hopscotch outside today!  It's the little things.

As we walked home, we realized how tired Josie was feeling.  She was very whiny & wiped completely out of energy.  We got to the apartment & she immediately laid on the couch!  She started listing off everything that "hurt" ... "My eyes hurt, my elbows hurt, my tummy hurts, my legs hurt, my head hurts" ... first time we have ever seen her that tired!

After day one, I can say that I am even MORE excited about this year now that we have learned more.

It is going to really be a life-changing year for us as a family.  We will never be the same & we will carry this year of preparation with us every where we go between now and the end of our lives.

Romans 10:13-15

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
and how shall they preach, except they be sent?
